Montgomery County Literary Arts Council celebrates the anniversary of Walt’s birthday. The theme this year ~
Walt Whitman – the First Hippie
The event coincided with the theme of the recently published anthology of poetry, Far Out – Poems of the ‘60s, edited by Wendy Barker and Dave Parsons.
The event presented a panel of Whitman scholars – Michael Waters, poet, recipient of five Pushcart Awards and author of numerous books of poetry; Dr. Jerome Loving, author of the highly acclaimed, Walt Whitman: The Song of Himself, and Bryce Milligan, publisher/editor of Far Out Poems of the 60’s (Wings Press) and author of several volumes of poetry.
A gathering of poets, including me, celebrated Walt’s contribution to America’s literary traditions. Whitman, one scholar observed, was perhaps the first American poet to self-publish.
The New York Times carried an article on a journalistic series called “Manly Health and Training,” written by Whitman. The manifesto recommended eating meat, wearing comfortable shoes “now specifically worn by base-ball players” in what is probably a reference to sneakers –
as we all know, sneakers are favorite footwear worn by Hippies of all ages!
